AMAZING work!! Fast and efficient, straightforward and easy to work with and I can’t say enough about the quality of the work. My deck looks better than it did when it was built!
Hi Pat – just a note of thanks tor the great house painting and repairs to our home. Painters Eduardo and Freddy and carpenters Victor and Daniel did an excellent job, went out of their way to keep the property neat each day, were polite, conscientious and gave great care to detail. .
Typically, the trim and doors are hand-brushed. However, brushing siding is a costly task. Hand brushing typically will take upwards of 2 coats of paint for full coverage and so you should expect a long project timeline.
When asked about a professional philosophy, Joel emphasizes the importance of employee care. “It goes without saying that you have to take care of your customers, but it’s also crucial to take care of your employees,” he says. “As a business grows, it becomes more challenging to maintain the quality of service. For us, the key has been to focus on our employees, because I know that if we take care of them, they’ll take care of our customers. That’s why we put things in place like health care and 401(k) benefits—they help us attract people who are serious about their careers as painters. Our clients are always happy with the quality of our work and the way our crew members treat them, so it has definitely paid off.”
Kara also says to make sure you choose the right primer. A water-based primer is typically used for drywall, while oil-based primer would be applied to stain-covered walls or panel installations.
House painting businesses should consider requiring clients to sign a service agreement before starting a new project. This agreement should clarify client expectations and minimize risk of legal disputes by setting out payment terms and conditions, service level expectations, and intellectual property ownership. Here is an example service agreement.

Mayco recently painted the exterior of my house, and they did a fantastic job. They quoted me a very fair price, and kept in touch with me throughout the season in regards to start date. Ignacio and his team arrived on time every morning at 8am, and worked until sun down. Their work was very detailed and thorough, the crew very professional, and they cleaned up well after themselves each day and when the job was done. An overall outstanding experience; I highly recommend them!- Stephen F.

You’re not expecting to paint entire houses on your own, are you? Once you’ve got your business set up, it’s time to figure out whether you want to hire employees or use subcontractors instead. If you choose the former option, you’ll have to buy equipment and supplies for your own workers to use—but you’ll retain control over your business. If you choose to use subcontractors, who are essentially professional freelance painters, you won’t have to buy materials—but you’ll lose some control over your business.

Spraying is a much better application if you are changing the color of your home. Spraying covers better and the application is more uniform. Spraying has no brush strokes and offers a more durable satin finish that looks much nicer. Hand brushing a new color may not give you the complete, even coverage you are looking for. A spray gun will give you full coverage and a more even coating for your new paint color. Spraying is more versatile and can be used on many different surfaces with an even finish and no brush strokes.
The sale of a repair, service, alteration, fitting, cleaning, painting, coating, inspection, or maintenance of tangible personal property that is affixed to real property,* or is installed by the contractor at the completion of the service, is a nontaxable real property construction activity. Example A contractor is hired to stain rails and install them on a staircase. This sale is not subject to tax. *Note Although services to real property are generally not subject to tax, there are certain types of property that are treated as tangible personal property for purposes of repair or other service to that property. Repair and other services to these items are taxable, regardless of the extent that they are attached to or fastened to real property. A complete list of these "deemed items" can be found in Part 3.A of Publication 207, Sales and Use Tax Information for Contractors.
When he’s not working, Joe devotes much of his free time to an avocational interest in viticulture. “I grow grapes and make my own wine,” he explains. “Right now, I actually have 50 gallons sitting around, waiting to be bottled. My wife and I also enjoy going wine tasting around the Bay Area.” In addition to winemaking, Joe enjoys outdoor activities like biking, wakeboarding in the delta and snowboarding at Lake Tahoe. Additionally, Joe keeps up with his and Jill’s two grown sons, Timothy and Steven, both of whom are pursuing careers in the construction trades.
*Note: Nigel does not recommend a certain minimum or maximum number of bids. Instead he recommends letting your research be your guide. If you really like five contractors, speak to five. If only two, that may be enough to find the right fit. You can always go back and get more later. Above: My porch looking fresh after the Catchlight crew came through. A painting estimate can also vary based on other aspects, such as whether or not the project involves different types of surfaces (e.g. stucco, brick, wood, metal, etc.), molding with simple or intricate details, and additional elements like doors, window frames, sashes, shutters, roof overhang, porches, gutters and downspouts.
