SAN JOSE — After years of splitting his livelihood between two seasonal jobs, Joel Gruber came to a point where he had to choose between a paintbrush and a snowboard. “Over a six-year period following high school, I worked two jobs,” he explains. “During the summer, I was a painter, and during the winter, I was a ski lift operator up at Squaw Valley. It was an awesome time. Eventually, however, I realized I needed to choose a focus. Ultimately, I chose to go with painting. Since I had a lot of experience, I decided my best move would be to start my own business. When I started in 2009, I was basically a one-man operation; today, we have six crews going, so it has grown quite a bit over the years.” .

LIVERMORE — Following a tumultuous career in high-tech sales, Nick Capurro was eventually able to find a more stable—not to mention colorful—livelihood. “I’d been downsized several times while working in high-tech sales,” he says. “It was the same scenario each time: the company would build up the sales until the time was right, then they’d get rid of as many people as they could and the president would sell. That happened to me three times in two years.”
If you still think of house painting only as a way to make your home look pretty, you are not using it to its full potential.
Painting your ceilings in addition to your walls allows for straighter lines and is a lot more forgiving when performing touch-ups. This helps reduce extra costs that may arise from hard to reach ceiling spaces.
The ceilings are all covered in popcorn finish. We really didn’t want to keep the texture at all, but decided to forgo removing it to save money since it’s mainly an aesthetic preference anyway. But we wanted to at least get the ceiling back to looking white. Previous residents must have been smokers, as the ceiling in the living and dining room had taken on a gross yellow patina. Although popcorn with butter is delicious, you don’t want your ceiling to look like buttered popcorn. There were some unsightly water stains as well. We initially just tried painting over the stains with KILZ primer (we actually just tested one spot to experiment.) The water based primer didn’t have a chance against the stain, and within minutes it was seeping through the (several) coats of primer.
Request the name and contact of their insurer. Even if the contractor presents you with a certificate of insurance, they could call right after your meeting and cancel. Call the insurer yourself to make sure that their insurance is up to date.

Masonite lap siding is commonly recommended for a hand brushed job. Hand brushing helps preserve the siding by pushing paint into every lap and it will seal the edge of each board where Masonite tends to swell and expand due to water damages.
One more thing to keep in mind is that the lowest estimate is rarely the best deal. That's because the quality of materials and workmanship is generally inferior. A competent, responsible contractor will never sacrifice quality for cost savings.
