“Put a rubber band around the paint can so you have something to cleanly scrape excess paint off your brush,” he says. “You don’t want to scrape it against the can’s opening because the paint will seep into the seal, making it harder to close. The rubber band will also just drip the excess paint back into the can, limiting your waste of paint.”

Today, as owner of Valencia Painting & Sons Inc., Jose says his favorite part of his job is making his customers happy. “I love seeing the expression on a customer’s face when they see the finished product. Sometimes a customer will go on vacation while we do the job, and when they return and see it, they’re so happy because their house looks brand new. It doesn’t get any better than that.”
Quality paints can also prevent wood from rotting. This helps you to avoid larger exterior house painting costs in the future.
In regard to his professional career, Yefim espouses the importance of customer service. “I was fortunate to recognize many years ago that customer service is the key to a successful business,” he says. “A lot of people can paint, but being able to deliver both a quality job and a positive experience for the customer…that’s an art form. I’m at a point in my career where that’s my main focus.”
“I take the time to look at every crack and caulk it,” he explained. “If there’s any type of hole or nick, I fill that in with patch and sand it down. I use a wet sanding technique to keep the dust from falling down all over the place and a lot of homeowners like that. Then two coats of paint over top of it is always the best look.”

Even if you go it alone, specialize to keep your initial investment low. If you do only interior painting, for example, you might get by with one ladder, a few brushes, rollers, basic hand tools and such, for an investment of less than $300. Again, you can add to your tools as you need to (every job is a bit different), and parlay profits into the equipment necessary for exterior painting or working on large commercial properties.

In both bedrooms there were holes knocked in the walls by the door handles (easily avoided with a $1 doorstop.) The holes were too big to patch with just spackle, so I got a couple of hole patches. They are sold near the spackles in your home improvement store. The directions are easy to follow, and they work! After paint, you wouldn’t know there once were big ol’ ugly holes. We used spackle to cover nail holes, minor cracks, and imperfections throughout the house. I tried a lot of different spackles in this house. My favorite one for minor repairs is Fast N Final. It applies easily, dries in a few minutes, and doesn’t require a whole lot of sanding.

MILLBRAE — Few professionals can trace their professional legacy back six generations, but Dean Knecht is one of them. “I’m a sixth-generation painter,” he affirms. “My family’s painting legacy began in Hamburg, Germany, and was carried over to the United States by my great-grandfather. His son—my grandfather—was a painting contractor, as was my father after him. I started working for my dad when I was 15 and later became his business partner. After about 18 years with my dad, I started my own business, which I’ve been running for almost 30 years.”
