A good place to start is to ask a trusted friend or general contractor for a recommendation. For my Cape Cod cottage, I found a great painter who painted the homes of my cousin, a contractor; my aunt, an architect; and my other aunt, who is even more picky than the other two. Prior to this painter however, I had hired a guy based on the recommendation of another friend with a similar historic house. Disaster! The paint job didn’t last two years. That’s why even with a recommendation, Nigel suggests you do some online research. Find out if others agree with your friend’s or relative’s assessment of the painter’s work, or if the contractor has experience working on your type of house. (When it comes to painting, modern and vintage homes are whole different animals.) “Put a rubber band around the paint can so you have something to cleanly scrape excess paint off your brush,” he says. “You don’t want to scrape it against the can’s opening because the paint will seep into the seal, making it harder to close. The rubber band will also just drip the excess paint back into the can, limiting your waste of paint.”

In order for contractors to obtain licenses in these states the applicants may have to prove on-the-job experience, financial ability, and in some cases they must fulfill education requirements before bidding and working on a project. Unfortunately, Pennsylvania is not one of those states requiring contractors to prove that they've earned the right to provide services to the community.
